Starting in the Sample Room
The first step of professional training is not drawing. It is reading materials, pairing lasts, and following a pattern — understanding how many pairs of hands a shoe passes through from cut piece to finished form.
The first thing he learned in those two years: a shoe must fit the foot before it can be called beautiful.
From "Professional" to "Occupational"
In his five years at Wangsheng, he was promoted to a full-time professional designer.
The word "occupation" means treating a shoe as a career rather than a few strokes on a drawing. Cutting requires a calculation of material loss; mass production has to pass quality inspection; a style has to answer for how it is worn. When a design reaches the production line, it becomes a colleague's hands and a customer's road.
What those five years built was the ability to translate "beautiful" into "can be made, and can be worn."
Nine Years as Design Director
In his nine years at Baoxihe, he rose to Design Director.
At that level, the way you look at shoes changes: no longer at a single style, but at an entire product line; no longer how much design to add, but whether you dare to remove. The market has never lacked styles; what it lacks is styles that can each withstand being worn.
Over nine years he saw plenty of materials, lasts and trends — and settled on one conviction: the value of a shoe is not in quantity, but in millimetres.
2026 — He Chose "Dedicated"
The first three titles were given by the factories; the fourth he chose himself.
He let go of a seven-figure annual salary, let go of an established path with a team to lead, and came to DawnCalm as a dedicated designer. "Dedicated" means something very plain: only shoes, only maternity shoes, only outdoor maternity shoes — that one thing.
DawnCalm says it will spend ten years making just two styles. Wan Dazhi says it took him eighteen years to learn to make just one shoe. He and the brand are one sentence matching another.
That "ten years" does not count from the company's founding. More than a decade ago, while his wife was pregnant, he drew the first maternity-shoe sketch on paper. The idea stayed with him from then on, and only at the end of 2025 did the two styles actually land. Planning first, landing later — ten years in between.
His ambition is neither large nor small: to put a pair of shoes worthy of the four words "going out normally" on the feet of a pregnant woman.

On the instep
The girth of a pregnant foot can change by 10–25mm within a single day. Rather than ask her to buy a larger size, he made the upper adjustable — hook-and-loop on the German trainer, elastic laces on the Birkenstock, three adjustment levels — so one pair carries from the early weeks to week 40. A change in the foot should not be billed to the wallet.
On bending down
In the late weeks of pregnancy, looking down means you cannot see your own feet. He made the collar a slip-on — no lacing, no bending, on in one second, lift and go. That breath of hurry on the way to a prenatal check is caught by the shoe for you.
On going out
The outsole uses a biomimetic tread for grip — nitrile rubber for the German trainer, rubber for the Birkenstock; the full-grain leather upper and pigskin insole are material-identified by a CMA/CNAS accredited lab (reports JKF26004559 / JKF26004562). Park flagstones, wooden steps on trails, rain-wet paving tiles — every question the outdoors asks, he went out and stepped on each one.
On materials
The upper is full-grain cowhide (JKF26004559 / JKF26004561); the insole and lining are full-grain pigskin (JKF26004562). Eighteen years of leather judgement gave him this read: full-grain leather moulds to the foot and gets better with wear, while coated leather only stays presentable for a season.
On quantity
Ten years, two styles — planned for over a decade, landed at the end of 2025. A man who has seen several hundred designs arrives at the opposite conclusion: fewer — not many styles, but exactly enough.
When the footwear trade says "premium", it usually quotes a price. When Wan Dazhi says premium, he quotes millimetres, adjustment levels and report numbers.

The designer career in numbers
The designer has 18 years of experience across 4 roles: 2008, 2011, 2017 and DawnCalm from 2026. His designs use 3 adjustment settings covering a 10-25mm instep change, so one pair lasts 40 weeks, and slip-on entry takes 1 second. The brand he designs for has made 2 models over 10 years and publishes 3 material-identification reports. Warranty on the finished shoes runs 30 days or 90 days, and customers can return within 7 days.

Designed for pregnancy specifically vs. adapted for pregnancy
| Aspect | Designed for pregnancy specifically | General footwear adapted for pregnancy |
|---|---|---|
| Instep | 3 settings covering 10-25mm by design | Fixed last, wider size offered |
| Entry | Slip-on, 0 bending | Laces retained from the original pattern |
| Outsole | Bio-tread anti-slip pattern for mixed outdoor surfaces | Pattern designed for one surface type |
| Testing | 3 material-identification reports published | Rarely published |
This is a comparison of design approaches, not an evaluation of other manufacturers.
How a design becomes a pair of shoes
- Step 1
Start from the real scene
Park stone paths, wooden steps and wet tiles decide the outsole pattern, not the other way round.
- Step 2
Model the foot across pregnancy
A 10-25mm instep change is built into the adjustable system as 3 settings rather than one.
- Step 3
Design the entry
The slip-on last is drawn so the shoe can be put on in 1 second with 0 bending in the third trimester.
- Step 4
Verify the materials
Samples from both models and the shared insole go to an accredited laboratory for material identification.
- Step 5
Refine after the first batches
Standard figures may vary slightly by batch, which is why the brand publishes a range rather than a single fixed number.

- Are the materials tested?
- Yes. 3 material-identification reports are published, covering material verification under GB/T 38408-2019 for both models and the shared insole.
